Stand
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Curated by Andi Norton
Stand is a public art exhibition of functioning bicycle stands designed as outdoor sculpture by some of South Africa’s finest creative minds. It highlights both the arts and non-motorised transport in our town and contributes to the growing reputation of Stellenbosch as a public art destination for local and international visitors. This project not only adds a new element of distinctive outdoor art to local streets, but also provides an opportunity for the community to think creatively and imaginatively about public spaces and urban design. With this being the year that Stellenbosch hosts the Mountain Biking World Cup, this exhibition will contribute to promoting the town as a cycling destination and highlight bicycles as a healthier, environmentally-friendly form of transportation. This is particularly pertinent in Stellenbosch, which is having to contend with ever-increasing traffic congestion in the middedorp.
