Gavin Younge

Gavin is Emeritus Professor at the Michaelis School of Fine Art and works internationally as a sculptor, writer, and academic. In 2012 he was awarded a UCT Creative Arts Award in recognition of the substantive and discursive contribution his work has made to contemporary art practice. In 2011 he won the Handspring Puppet Company’s award for his work with Jane Taylor, and his sculptural work has been acknowledged in various publications on contemporary art including Williamson and Jamal’s book Future Present: Art in the new South Africa, Jill Bennett’s book, Empathic vision - Affect, Trauma, and Contemporary Art and Maud de la Forterie’s essays “Deep” and “Skin”, published in French. Most recently his work featured in Front / Lignes - 15 ans d’art contemporain published in 2017 by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux in Paris. His wide experience of publicly-sited sculpture (Standard Bank, UCT, CTICC, Rhodes university, Silo-precinct, V & A Waterfront) led to his appointment as international curator for Sculpture by the Sea - Cottesloe 2018. Recent solo exhibitions include Water Matters featuring folded metal sculptures and six ‘redrawn geographies’ which was presented by Ilse Schermers in January 2016. In September 2017 he held a mini-retrospective exhibition with Art Salé in Montpellier. Also active as an academic, Professor Younge presented a paper at The Image Conference in Venice, November 2017
