In 2012, the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust (SOST) launched KickstART as an educational extension of its public art programme. Created to make art more accessible to young people across Stellenbosch, KickstART introduced learners—particularly those with limited access to formal arts education—to the possibilities of art, design and the creative industries.

In September 2012, more than 180 learners from 15 schools in and around Stellenbosch were invited to participate in guided tours of the town’s public artworks, followed by a series of art workshops at the Stellenbosch University Museum. The learners’ enthusiasm, originality and creative potential inspired SOST to extend the programme beyond a once-off experience. Following the workshops, an experienced curatorial panel identified five learners who demonstrated exceptional talent, commitment and promise.

In 2013, the five selected learners received bursaries to attend the PJ Olivier Art Centre in Stellenbosch. The programme also provided the art materials and supplies they needed, transport to and from classes, meals on class days, and career counselling and guidance through the Welgevallen Community Clinic. Each learner was also paired with a carefully selected mentor who could offer encouragement, practical support and guidance suited to their individual needs. This holistic approach was designed to help learners remain engaged in the programme, build confidence and reach their full creative potential.

KickstART grew through the contribution of a dedicated network of approximately 40 volunteers, including artists, teachers, arts activists, child psychologists and academics. The programme was also supported by organisations across Stellenbosch, including the Stellenbosch Arts Association, Stellenbosch360, the PJ Olivier Art Centre, Spier Arts Academy, the University’s Sasol Art Museum, Stellenbosch Municipality, Stellenbosch University and Deloitte.

What began as the educational arm of SOST became a meaningful example of what is possible when artists, educators, organisations and communities work together. Through KickstART, SOST sought to make a long-term contribution to the lives of young people in and around Stellenbosch by developing creative skills, building confidence and opening pathways into the arts and creative industries. At its heart, the programme reflected a simple belief: that access to art can help young people recognise their own potential, imagine new possibilities and take meaningful steps towards their future.

Looking ahead, the hope is for KickstART to continue growing as a space where young people can explore their creativity, develop their confidence and discover new pathways through art and design. By building on the relationships, lessons and impact of its early years, the programme has the potential to reach a new generation of emerging creatives and continue making a meaningful difference in communities across Stellenbosch. With the support of artists, educators, partners and the wider community, KickstART can continue opening doors, nurturing talent and helping young people imagine futures filled with possibility.
