Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust (SOST) is a non-profit organisation supported by patrons, foundations, and corporations. It brings contemporary art to a broad audience in Stellenbosch by mounting free, annual exhibitions that offer the public powerful experiences with art and the urban environment. Created in 2012, SOST’s primary mandate is to make art accessible to all. Since the first exhibition, the Trust has brought over 250 works of art to the streets of Stellenbosch by some of the world's most renowned artists. SOST is the official art partner of the Art Mile and hosts the Stellenbosch Triennale every three years.
Education programmes are integral parts of each exhibition. School excursions and workshops ensure that children of all ages are exposed to public art, teaching them essential 21st-century skills like curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. Access to art changes the way young minds think, introducing them to patterns and concepts which assist them to “connect the dots” and find creative solutions to everyday challenges.
With the cooperation and support of the Stellenbosch Municipality, outdoor artworks are placed at approved locations in the historic town, giving locals and visitors the opportunity to live, work and play in their midst.
