Rain Crier
Jacques Buys
2018
Stand
As Stellenbosch faces one of the worst droughts in living memory, artist Jacques Buys began to ponder the ancient rituals of rainmaking and ways to summon the rain. When designing this bicycle stand his thoughts turned to the famous Whale Crier in the nearby coastal town of Hermanus, who is heard blowing on a kelp horn to alert tourists of whales nearby. Some believe that the sound of the kelp horn also calls the whales into sight. As a fun, interactive weather experiment Jacques invites all who use this bicycle stand to call into the horn to summon much-needed rain!
