Sentinel Horizontal Development

Edoardo Villa

2012

20 Stellenbosch

“Sentinel” is about the idea of a watchful guardian presence, expressed through an abstract, upright, totem‑like form that suggests a figure standing guard in space. The title and posture of the sculpture evoke protection, vigilance, and stability, turning the work into a symbolic “protector” of its surroundings rather than a literal human figure.

“Horizontal Development” is about the human figure unfolding in space as a laid‑out, expansive presence rather than a single upright body. The title points to Villa’s interest in how form “develops” or evolves horizontally, with limbs, torsos or structural elements stretched and opened out so that movement, growth and internal energy become visible across a long, low composition.
