Artist’s statement

(Arcadian: a vision of rusticity, peacefulness, simplicity and pastoralism)

I contributed to a group show, Horse, where each artwork showed a particular view or trait of a horse. I considered the plough, perhaps because I am known as an ’abstract’ sculptor or perhaps because in the past I sculpted at a factory that produced agricultural equipment! I like the idea of Arcadian balance just like the English painters Constable and Gainsborough did, and I was also inspired by Erwin Panofsky’s book and video series titled The Ascent of Man which tell of two major occurrences that are portentous comments on the civilisation of man:

1. hybridisation of grasses, leading to harvesting,and leading to man forming settlements and engaging in farming

2. domestication of the horse, providing the potential strength needed to cultivate crops, wage war or commit organised theft

The sculpture became an abstraction of the equine body and the tillage implement. The shield is used protectively in battle and aggressively as a plough. The horse is exploited either way but it still embodies the idyllic and romantic notions found in a mythological Arcadia.

Ek het aan ’n groeptentoonstelling oor perde deelgeneem met die opdrag om ’n besondere beskouing of kenmerk van ’n perd uit te beeld. Die gedagte aan ’n ploeg het by my opgekom – miskien omdat ek as ’n abstrakte kunstenaar bekend staan of omdat ek voorheen beeldhouwerk by ’n fabriek gedoen het wat plaasimplemente vervaardig. Ek hou van die idee van ’n Arkadiese balans, soos uitgebeeld in die werk van die Engelse skilders Constable en Gainsborough, en ek het ook inspirasie geput uit Erwin Panofsky se boek en videoreeks The Ascent of Man wat handel oor twee gebeure wat kommentaar lewer op ’n onheilspellende toekoms vir die menslike beskawing:

1. kruisteling van grasse wat lei tot oeswerk, vorming van nedersettings en boerdery

2. temming van perde om hul potensiële krag vir die verbouing van gesaaides, oorlogvoering of georganiseerde plundering aan te wend

Die beeld is’n abstrahering van die perdfiguur en die oeswerktuig. Die skild word as beskerming in oorlogvoering gebruik en aan die ander kant word dit op ’n aggressiewe wyse gebruik om mee te ploeg. In beide gevalle word die perd uitgebuit, maar die perd versinnebeeld steeds die idilliese en romantiese idee van die mitologiese Arkadië.
