B. 1936

Herman van Nazareth, born in 1936 in Evergem, Belgium, is a distinguished artist known for his incisive sociopolitical commentary. He pursued his studies in Ghent and Antwerp before receiving a bursary in the early 1960s to attend the Michaelis School of Art at the University of Cape Town. As a member of the anti-Apartheid Sestigers group, Van Nazareth gained prominence in the 1960s and 70s for his powerful, provocative works. His art, marked by a keen critique of social and political injustices, continues to resonate amid contemporary global sociopolitical turbulence. Aside from his well-known sculptures and portraiture, van Nazareth has painted a series of landscapes of no specific geographic location, focussing on remembered moments, emotions, and atmospheric changes of light.
