Andries Johannes Botha was born in Pretoria in 1952. He studied fine art at the University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal) in the 1970s and went on to lecture at the Durban University of Technology. He is primarily known for his sculptures, but also has a background in printmaking. Botha has received numerous awards for his work, including the Volkskas Atelier Merit Award (1987), the Cape Town Triennale Merit Award (1988), the Standard Bank Young Artist Award (1990), and the National Vita Award (1992). He has created several trusts and foundations, such as Create Africa South Trust, Amazwi Abesifazane, the Human Elephant Foundation, and the Andries Botha Foundation. These organizations reflect his strong interest in global social, political, and environmental issues, which are also prominent themes in his art. He currently lives and works in Durban.
