Standing on a starting block, the life-sized figure of a woman swimmer represents a universal image of the female form. Part depiction of the artist’s mother and part self-portrait, Swimmer No. 5 embodies the artist’s childhood experiences of fear and anticipation — standing on the edge of what lies ahead — as well as her current reflections as an adult, wife and mother on these earlier preoccupations.
