Artist’s statement

Lewis’s fragmented works are considered powerful and unsettling statements about the erosion of the world's natural wilderness areas and the destruction of natural habitats, but this was not consciously intended at the time. If the earlier healthy and functioning animal represents those aspects of the artist's self that were instinctual, wild and free, then this fragment speaks of the consequences of taming and destroying our animal connection to the senses. Lewis shares his sense of what has been lost as we increasingly deny our wild origins, and celebrates the possibility that the primordial bond between humankind, animal and earth that exists in consciousness is within reach, and waiting to be reclaimed.
