Within the city concrete surfaces surround us. And yet traces of human presence can be found in a constant layering of advertisements, posters, graffiti and an inevitable weathering and marking of surfaces. These are traces of our own bodies in a moving, noisy, penetrable and impenetrable city. This “sleeping man” sculpture extends this urban concrete skin- providing an extension to the environment and contributing to the surfaces and textures of the city as it shifts constantly between construction and destruction, monument and ruin. He is a cavity- a shell, his concrete form and the interior space within it alluding to a sense of place and placelessness. He balances horizontally on the steel base, in dialogue with the open public space and surrounding architecture. He is a placeholder for all people in a state of rest or waiting.

In die stad is ons omring deur betonoppervlakke. En tog is die spore van menslike teenwoordigheid te bespeur in ’n voortdurende laag advertensies, plakkate, graffiti en die onafwendbare verwering en merk van oppervlakke. Dít is die spore van ons eie liggame in ’n stad wat aanhou beweeg en geraas maak, terselfdertyd deurdringbaar en ondeurdringbaar. Hierdie “slapende mens”-beeld is ’n verlengstuk van die stad se betonhuid. Dit sit die omgewing voort en dra by tot die oppervlakke en teksture van die stad namate dit aanhoudend beweeg tussen konstruksie en destruksie, monument en murasie. Hy is ’n holte – ’n dop. Sy betonvorm en die ruimte daarbinne sinspeel op ’n plekbesef én plekloosheid. Horisontaal gebalanseer op ’n staalvoetstuk is hy in gesprek met die openbare oop ruimte en omringende argitektuur. Hy is ’n plekhouer vir alle mense, rustend of wagtend.
