Stellenbosch has long presented itself as a town grounded in history and tradition with its white broekie lace, Cape Dutch gables and sashed windows along tree-lined avenues. These architectural details are more than aesthetic markers; they embody a deep respect for heritage. Yet beneath this familiar exterior lies a town in constant motion. Just a short walk down Andringa Street reveals a vibrant mix of new businesses, new cultural experiences and emerging creative voices. With each visit, something feels different. A subtle but unmistakable shift in energy. This coexistence of preservation and progress is what inspired the conceptual direction of this public artwork. The design draws on the infinity symbol as a visual metaphor for this ongoing exchange between past and future. The looping form represents the gentle push and pull of change. It highlights the way new communities are introduced, some old beliefs dissolve, new patterns are formed, and a shared identity emerges, subtly reshaping the cultural landscape. Installed directly onto the road, the artwork becomes part of the town’s daily movement. It’s slow, steady, cyclical and intentional. It suggests that Stellenbosch is not static, but always in a state of becoming. In honouring both tradition and transformation, this artwork celebrates the nuance of a community actively reshaping its future, without losing sight of where it began.
