Hello Stellenbosch

I truly believe that all art is about obsession.…so I found my obsession in popular culture storytelling and the iconography of contemporary history, architecture and the celebrity cult. Influenced by street art stencil graffiti and classic Warhol Pop art, my art reflects our common interest in the current and historic obsession with our immediate surroundings. I explore the collective memory of society by representing our aspirations, desires, style, fears, nostalgia and joy through popular culture iconography, and in the case of “Hello Stellenbosch” the details and character that form this joyful, yet complex towm. These 23, layered, hand cut stencils represent just a small portion of what makes Stellenbosch so unique and generous in visual stimulation, telling its own story of progress and beauty. My bigger collection of architectural and urban landscape stencils, including other towns and city areas represent the development and exploration of style and technique in South Africa. The combination of “high” and “low” culture, sophistication versus uber kitsch and other comparisons to real life assists the viewer to question their own level of style, knowledge of culture and how they fit in with contemporary society.
