Dreamscapes
Specially commissioned for this dreamscape public art exhibition, this life-size wire car model of a 1970s Mini Cooper was made over a period of 2 months by young artists at the Philipstown WireCar Foundation. Philipstown, a remote town in Karoo town in South Africa, is a place wired with tradition, passion and creativity. Once a year, the town erupts with excitement as kids push the wire cars they have built around the streets in the WireCar grand prix on a 3km track. A wire car (or draakar, as locals call it) is a DIY toy built from scrap wire, soda cans, bottle caps and a lot of ingenuity. Every year, the kids of Philipstown test their creativity and skill by pushing these cars to their limits. We invite visitors, both young and old, to interact with the car - get in the driver seat, stand with your head out of the sunroof - and remember what it feels like to be young and free, on the open road to your dreams…
