Building Block

Dreamscapes
At first glance, this oversized Lego-inspired block looks like something from a child’s imagination — playful, colourful, and full of possibility. It invites curiosity, touch, and delight. But beneath its bright exterior lies something far more serious: a working borehole system, installed to help Stellenbosch effectively manage its water future.
This artwork celebrates the power of creativity to transform how we see essential infrastructure. By turning a utilitarian container into a monumental toy, the piece reminds us that the building blocks of a town are not only pipes, pumps, and plans, but also imagination, cooperation, and care for one another.
Like a Lego brick, the work is both simple and profound. It asks us to look again at what supports us, to value what is often hidden, and to remember that a sustainable future is something we construct collectively.
En as my bene stram word
En as ek stadiger moet loop
As die are op my hande soos
Verliefde wurms knoop
As alles wat ons helder was
Verdoof na grys en grou
Laat my tog, soos kindertyd
My verwondering behou
