They don't make them like they used to

“They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To” by Mary Sibande is about reimagining the life and status of Black domestic workers in South Africa, using the fictional character Sophie (modeled on the artist and her female relatives) to shift a maid’s role into one of power, imagination and self‑definition. In this work Sophie, dressed in a transformed maid’s uniform that resembles an elaborate Victorian gown, calmly sews a bright blue Superman cape, turning a stereotypically “feminine” and servile activity into the act of creating a heroic identity for herself.
